Co-Founder and CEO, Know Your Crew – New York
Alison, her co-founders, and their team are shaking up the way people can learn about their friends and family with their newly launched app, Know Your Crew. Her background in Cognitive Science from Yale University and MBA from the University of Pennsylvania has helped them build a truly unique app that not only helps you discover new things about your friends, but about yourself as well. We were able to spend a day with Alison and learn more about her, the Know Your Crew story, and what it takes to be an entrepreneur.
On starting her own company:
There is nothing comparable to the thrill of creating a product and putting it out into the world for people to use and engage with. I was exposed to the excitement of this type of impact through my consulting job at What If Innovation Company. This experience made me eager to apply my innovation and strategy skills to the challenge of building my own business.
After my co-founders and I came up with the concept of Know Your Crew, we knew we had to go for it. From Day 1, our team felt so much passion for our product. We believe in the potential for Know Your Crew to positively impact people’s lives by helping them feel more connected to friends and family – and this keeps us motivated every day!
On the inspiration for Know Your Crew:
My co-founders Virginia, Elisabeth, and I are obsessed with psychology – and getting under the surface of what makes people tick. We believe your closest friends and family know you in ways that are more specific than any traditional personality test. For example, are you someone who secretly looks forward to pop quizzes? Or someone who always over-packs for a weekend trip? We wanted to find a way to scale this kind of conversation that is authentic, insightful, and often hilarious. And we wanted to make it fun and social – like our favorite board games from growing up. Out of these inspirations, Know Your Crew was born.
On who inspires her:
My sister and my mom: My sister, a doctor at Brigham and Women’s hospital, and my mom, a Ph.D. clinical psychologist, each care for patients every day, helping heal their bodies and minds. Their dedication to their patients, daily hard work, and direct impact is an inspiration!
Best advice for girls who want to be entrepreneurs:
Find a mentor who is not only someone who you can look up to for inspiration, but also someone who you feel comfortable approaching with your ‘stupid’ questions.
Be bold at networking events – go up to people and introduce yourself!
Get hands on experience – pursue internships at startups!
